Whether in the physical transition from one cultural district to another or the emotional transition of immigration from one culture to another, there is a period of uncertainty and a sense of not belonging. This is the edge between two cultures. What then, happens if we create a habitable edge, a place for finding, instead of losing, our identity in the transition?

09 PROCESS WORK

'Design a God-Damn Building Day'
- the goal was to stop analyzing and just design for
6 hours and then evaluate the results of the exercise.

Results of critique: Harrison Avenue is underdeveloped, and large open
space is not the right solution for the periphery of the site.
It neither projects nor protects.

'Design a God-Damn Building Day'

R
esults of critique: Covered space on Warren Street corresponds to the
scale of Dudley Station and adds a feeling of street enclosure.

Inserting the Mask into the Site

- The site has to respond to a residential scale on Harrison Ave and a Commercial Scale on Dudley Street. The analysis of the carnival mask already established a method of changing scales in the form of the fan-like shape. Essentially, the mask becomes a structural grid and creates smaller, mask-like spaces, that protect a courtyard space within.

Results of Critique: There are too may entrances into the site and it may negate the intent to funnel people in through the two larger entrances.
Results of Critique: The entry feels as if it should be flipped towards the courtyard space instead of engaging the street front.
